85: Something PJ Vera did

This is what a $339 refurbished iPad 2 looks like after you drop it from a table and it lands on ceramic tile.

The good news is that it had accidental damage coverage ($49 when bought with the iPad 2 through Walmart.com).

The bad news is that PJ is going to have to wait for it to be sent back to their shop and for a replacement unit to be sent back to us, which will take weeks.

63: Lucky

This is Nikki, aka "Caustic Kitty." We adopted Nikki when she was 8 or 9 years old (18 months ago) during a kitty volume crisis at the county animal shelter (basically, they were getting ready to euthanize the hard to adopt cases like hers to make room for more animals). Her history was not very appealing: trouble socializing with other cats, issues with eating and using the litter, etc. But she's the one that immediately connected with PJ. The food issues were easily fixed by picking the right product, and she's been pretty much trouble-free ever since. Yes, she's grumpy, and she likes to be left alone but once she senses that PJ is asleep she is very social.

A year after we got her there was another kitty emergency at the shelter and we adopted Dean, aka "Programmer's Kitty." Dean is a goofball, they told us he was 3 years old but we suspect he was barely a year old when they picked him up as a stray. Since Dean doesn't mind being picked up, it helps to get Nikki a little more peace of mind from PJ's constant attention. As for socialization between Dean and Nikki, they get along perfectly. Our basic problem with Dean is that PJ wants to pick him up every 10 minutes, and from the racket it's impossible to tell if he is holding him too tight or if Dean simply wants him to let him off.

Dean wasn't our first pick. PJ had set his sights on another tuxedo, but when we tried to play with her at the shelter she freaked out and wouldn't let us come near to her. When they brought out Dean, who was almost a clone, he immediately rolled over so we could rub his tummy. He sealed the deal on the spot.

I don't know what else to call the odds of us finding those two amazing creatures, luck does exist.
